View the Virtual Unveiling of the City's first Rainbow Crosswalk - June 18th at 10:00 am
NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The City of Niagara Falls will be virtually unveiling the City’s first Rainbow Crosswalk on Thursday, June 18th at 10:00 am. The completion and unveiling of this important project is a great way for the city to help celebrate Pride Month!
The rainbow crosswalk honours and celebrates diversity and inclusion and shows the City’s support of the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, +) community.
About the Niagara Falls Rainbow Crosswalk
The Niagara Falls Rainbow Crosswalk project was initiated in August of 2019 with a request to City Council by community member and advocate, Falynn Shaw. Falynn works closely with OUTNiagara and is always looking for ways to support the Niagara Falls community.
Since that time, staff researched and reported back about possible styles and locations for the crosswalk and Council approved the final project in January of 2020.
The Downtown BIA provided their support for the project and committed to funding fifty percent of the installation costs. The total cost of the project is approximately $3000.
The crosswalk will be located on the south side of the Queen Street and Erie Avenue intersection, connecting City Hall and the Rosberg Family Park. The colourful markings making up the crosswalk will be composed of thermoplastic materials which provide a low-maintenance long lasting finish.
“With each step that residents take along our new rainbow crosswalk, we hope that each person will be reminded of the steps that their City and community organizations have taken toward greater and ongoing inclusivity. We stand beside our LGBTQ+ community and believe this is one way we can take action and show our support!” - Jim Diodati, Mayor of Niagara Falls
“This rainbow is going to show solidarity between the LGBTQ+2SIA community and City of Niagara Falls! This is historic for this region!” – Falynn Shaw, Community Advocate
“The Downtown BIA is happy to financially support the Rainbow Crosswalk installation. Everyone is welcome downtown, and the brightly coloured crosswalk is a great way to show our support for the LGBTQ+ community!” – Ron Charbonneau, Chair, Downtown BIA
