Pilot Program to Manage Unwanted Vegetation in Select Areas

This August, the City of Niagara Falls will begin a new pilot program to help manage unwanted vegetation in select medians, sidewalks, and roadsides in select areas. Spectrum Resource Group has been awarded the contract to apply a vinegar-based herbicide as part of this initiative.

This is the first time the City has used this method, and we want to share what’s being done, why, and what residents can expect.

WHAT ARE WE SPRAYING?

We are applying horticultural vinegar (20% acetic acid) to control weeds growing in hard-to-maintain areas like medians and sidewalks.

Horticultural vinegar is similar to the vinegar you use for cleaning or cooking, but at a higher concentration. It’s approved for horticultural use and offers a natural alternative to synthetic herbicides.

HOW DOES VINEGAR WORK ON PLANTS?

Vinegar works by burning the leaves of plants, causing tissue damage to any surface it contacts.

Unlike many synthetic herbicides:

  • It is not absorbed into the plant.
  • It does not remain active in the soil after application.
  • There are no lasting environmental impacts from its use.

It works like “chemical mowing," quickly controlling weeds with fewer risks to the applicator compared to methods like weed whacking or burning.

WHY ARE WE TREATING MEDIANS AND SIDEWALKS?

Weeds in medians and sidewalk cracks can cause real damage. Roots grow into cracks and gaps, forcing them wider over time. This mechanical erosion can lead to:

  • Structural damage to medians and roadways
  • Costly large-scale repairs in the future
  • Reduced safety and visibility for drivers and pedestrians

By controlling weeds now, we protect infrastructure, improve sightlines, and keep Niagara Falls looking clean and welcoming.
