Residents reminded to drive safely as students return to school

NIAGARA FALLS, ON- As students gear up to return to school on Tuesday, September 2nd, the City of Niagara Falls reminds all drivers of the importance of safe driving, especially around School Crossing locations.

In accordance with the Highway Traffic Act Regulation, drivers must stop when a School Crossing Guard displays a stop sign. Those who fail to comply with this law risk facing fines ranging from $150 to $500, along with three demerit points. Additionally, fines are doubled in Community Safety Zones, which are prominently marked near schools and public areas.

To promote road safety, the City emphasizes five critical points for all drivers to follow. All drivers must:

  • STOP - When approaching a School Crossing location.
  • OBEY - The provisions of the Highway Traffic Act.
  • RESPECT – The authority of the Crossing Guard.
  • PATIENCE – Remain stopped until everyone, including the Guard, has safely cleared the crossing.
  • PROCEED – Only when it is safe to do so.

Respect parking regulations
Drivers are also reminded to respect parking regulations, as these restrictions are put in place for the safety of students and pedestrians. With the anticipated increase in traffic around school zones, it is crucial that all parking laws are observed. Violators may receive tickets, with fines ranging from $33.00 to $300.00.

Safety is for everyone. Safety Before Convenience.
