NIAGARA FALLS, ON - As a result of extremely dry conditions across the City of Niagara Falls, Fire Chief Jo Zambito has issued a fire ban across the municipality. The ban is being issued in the interest of public safety with the hopes that weather conditions will change in the coming weeks and much needed rainfall will arrive.
“Issuing a fire ban is a last resort that we never want to implement but the current climate conditions in the City are not appropriate nor safe for any fire” stated Fire Chief Zambito. “With these extremely dry conditions it only takes a second for fires to spread rapidly and that risk is simply not worth jeopardizing public safety” added Chief Zambito.
There are currently 70 wildfires burning within the province, which highlights the risk of fire spread this time of year and the risk of activities that cause fires. The use of consumer fireworks is also prohibited under this fire ban. “The Niagara Falls Fire Department would also like to remind residents to be safe when discarding cigarette butts as we have seen several mulch and deck fires in recent weeks due to the dry conditions and careless cigarette disposal” added Chief Zambito.
The Niagara Falls Fire Department is committed to public safety and is thankful to the community for their support and cooperation during this fire ban. If someone would like to report a fire during the fire ban, the department asks they call the department’s non-emergency line at 905-356-1321 ext. 2200.
Individuals who are found to be conducting open-air burning will be charged and subject to fines as well as fees for service for the fire department responding to their properties.
