Ontario Senior Awards: Nomination Deadlines Approaching

Do you know of an outstanding senior who has enriched the social, cultural or civic life of our community? Nominate them for an Ontario Senior of the Year Award or an Ontario Senior Achievement Award.

You may nominate anyone age 65 or older, who lives in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and who has made our city a better place to live through contributions to any field such as the arts, literature, community service, volunteering, education, environment, fitness, or humanitarian activities.

You cannot nominate yourself, someone who has passed away, or someone currently holding political office.  An individual also cannot be nominated for achievements related to a current political appointment.

Nomination forms for both awards are available to download from the Government of Ontario's website. If you would like to have a printed copy of the form, copies may be picked up at all Niagara Falls Public Library locations. Please check the library's website for open hours.

Ontario Senior of the Year Award
Nominations for the Ontario Senior of the Year Award must be submitted to the Province through your municipality and will be accepted by the City until May 27 and reviewed by the Niagara Falls Seniors Advisory Committee. A copy of the nomination form is available to download from the Government of Ontario's website.  For details on how to submit your nomination, please visit our website or call 905-356-7521 ext 4140.

Ontario Senior Achievement Award
Nominations for this award should be submitted directly to the Province via the upload link on their website. They will be accepted until June 15.  A nomination form is available to download from their website, as well. All nominations should include a brief description about why your nominee should receive the award. This may include:

  • a description of the achievement in detail, including any background or related historical information
  • what made this achievement outstanding – indicate any extraordinary circumstances or challenges
  • how this achievement was started
  • examples of the nominee’s ongoing leadership and dedication
  • how long have you known the nominee
  • two or more signed testimonials from two different people (not including the nominator) who know and support your nominee’s achievements

An independent selection committee, appointed by the Minister of Seniors Affairs and made up of senior community members, reviews each nomination and selects the recipients for this award. Up to 20 award recipients are selected each year.  A special ceremony honouring the recipients is held each year in the fall at Queen’s Park.

For more information about either of these awards, the nomination processes, or rules, and to download or submit a nomination form please visit the Government of Ontario's website.
