About 60 Plus Older Adult Programs 

If you are 60 or older, enjoy interacting with others, or want to meet new friends, why not join us? Our 60 Plus Recreation Programs enhance the quality of life and well-being of those 60 and over in the City of Niagara Falls. The Programs strive to contribute to the social, educational and recreational needs by offering programs and services in a safe and comfortable environment.

Our 60-plus Programs operate on a membership basis. Anyone who is 60 years of age and older is eligible to become a member. The facilities at the Centre provide an opportunity for a variety of recreation, arts and cultural activities. Membership entitles one to participate in the programs and special events offered by paying a nominal drop-in fee or purchasing passes. Our facility can improve your life in many ways, and you will soon see the benefits of membership, such as making new friends, participation in a regular exercise routine, or involvement in volunteer opportunities.

JUNE IS SENIORS MONTH 2024

June is Senior’s month across Canada. To celebrate this, and to help meet the goals and objectives of the Seniors Advisory Committee, the committee has schedule multiple presentations and events throughout the month of June.  These events are focused on education and learning for this age demographic will also being opportunities for learning and input from the community to the committee.

Free Speaker Series 

Tuesdays at 2:00pm at Victoria Avenue Library

June 4 at 2:00pm - Gardening for Seniors

Presented by Renee Delany, Natural Health Practitioner and small scale farmer. How to improve the current food system.

June 11  - Medical Series

Bryce Brunarski, Operations Supervisor for Public Relations and Affairs at Niagara Emergency Medical Services, will be presenting and answering questions about paramedic services, specifically for seniors. 

If you've never used an ambulance before, what is it like. What do they do? Where do they go? What does it cost? What training do paramedics have?

June 18 -  Art for Seniors

Presented by Kim Van Stygeren. An overview of Art & Culture in Niagara Falls, plus, what is upcoming for the new Culture Hub, The Exchange.

June 25th – Music Therapy for Older Adults 

Presented by Victoria Rondinelli, Director of Niagara Men’s Chorus and Director of the Robert Wood Singers. Music is enjoyed by all of us, but for seniors it has shown to have actual health benefits. Victoria will explore this and various other topics in music.

June 6 - Sleep, Aging and Mental Health

Presented by Dr. Nicholas Kates, Professor, Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences.

Aging & Mental Health - With aging comes inevitable stress. Physical health and abilities deteriorate, socioeconomic status changes and family support is variable for the elderly. All of these factors can contribute to decreased psychological functioning and susceptibility to psychiatric illnesses and depression. Also stress related hormones can contribute to disorders such as Alzheimer's.

Importance of Sleep and the Aging Brain - Sleep is essential to the maintenance of the central nervous system and its associated cognitive abilities. Sleep duration often declines with age. Reduced sleep quality correlates with cognitive impairment. Therefore improving sleep may delay or reverse cognitive aging.

June 13 -  Erica Blythe on Legal Considerations of Estate Planning,  Ruth-Ann Nieuwesteeg on Planning Meaningful Celebrations of Life, and Mark Richardson on Environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial practices  

Legal Considerations of Estate Planning - Join us to gain insights of the importance of estate planning and the significance of Wills and Powers of Attorney.

Planning Meaningful Celebrations of Life - 

Environmentally friendly alternative to traditional burial practices - Learn about the growing trend toward cremation, including options to be scattered, or inured in a variety of columbarium options; the greater focus of the presentation will be the interest and awareness of “green or natural” burials, and our own Willow’s Rest Natural Burial Section.

June 20th -Diet and Nutrition as Related to Cancer Prevention and Treatment with a Q&A panel to follow.

Presented by Dr. McMillian. Dr. McMillian will demystifying Cancer and explain the disease within. He will also talk about the range of facilities and services that are available at the Walker Family Cancer Centre. Dr McMillian will also address cancer treatment covering all modalities of treatment, but focusing primarily on his specialty - Radiation Oncology.

Presented by Pamela Szabo-Kode - Nutrition and Cancer Prevention for SeniorsLearn how to easily incorporate more fruits and vegetables, why whole grains are beneficial for health, the role of healthy fats in the diet, and how to ensure you are meeting protein needs. Reviewing the basics of label reading.

Councillor Campbell, and Mayor Jim Diodati will also be on a panel to share their Cancer experiences.

June 27 - Aging in a Healthy Way

Presented by Christina Huntington and Julie Rubel. Much has been said about living longer and living well. In this session, we aim to explore what the evidence suggests will help us age in a healthy way, focusing on the physical, mental, and social aspects of aging. Throughout the session we will share with you updates in aging research as well as resources to continue your learning journey. We will also integrate highlights from Niagara Health’s Care for Older Persons strategy to illustrate how Niagara Health is committed to caring with and for older adults.
