Lindsay-Ann Chilcott

Is there an artwork/song/written piece you are most proud of? Why?

My proudest artwork is the first self-portrait in "Cyborg Series". This painting was a struggle at first, because it was the first time painting a portrait of myself. This work is also the largest portrait I've done to date, since my work usually revolves around a smaller scale. While this piece took me roughly seventy hours to complete, it was rewarding to see my style and skill grow throughout the process. I learned how to create more realistic skin tones, how to blend the paint so that it transitioned smoothly, and I also worked on keeping a steady hand.

What inspires you?

I am a multimedia artist from Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specializing in Surrealism, my work is often inspired by themes of psychology, popular culture, and the uncanny. Through many different mediums, I enjoy working with a variety of experimental medias such as oil painting, sculpture, and upcycling.

What is your most important artist tool?

The most important artist tool that I own in the studio is mineral spirits. I love to push myself to create realistic oil paintings, and mineral spirits allow me to blend the paint by thinning out the thicker medium. This way, I can add more detail and layers so that my paintings slowly appear three dimensional.

Is there something you can't live without in your studio?

I own a collection of cassettes and records that I play through surround sound. Music continues to be something I require around me while painting and sculpting. Listening to music helps me focus, and it also helps me think of new ideas for future series.

Why do you make art/music/write?

I enjoy expressing my interests and emotions through painting and sculpture. Being an introverted person, I oftentimes find it hard to express my thoughts, and my work allows me to relieve my anxiety by spending hours creating uncanny artworks.

Growing up with anxiety, I struggled finding a stable output until I began drawing around the age of eleven. I began researching topics in psychology and parapsychology throughout my youth, and later found these topics interesting. From there, my surrealistic journey portraying the uncanny began. Painting and sculpture continues to act as a positive output for my mental health, that allows me to create interesting works that all viewers can relate to.

Do you have any artistic projects coming up?

Currently, my work is being displayed at Mahtay Café & Lounge in St. Catharines, Ontario until June 4, 2022. I am continuing the work on "Cyborg Series", which will be exhibited later this year when completed. Until then, I will be periodically teaching art classes at Forestview Public School in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
