CITY OF NIAGARA FALLS TO COMMEMORATE NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

NIAGARA FALLS, ON -  Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Flag raising and lowering and orange bench unveiling

The City of Niagara Falls will raise the “Every Child Matters Flag” and lower it to half-staff on Saturday, September 30, to mark the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Members of the public and Indigenous community members are welcome to participate. The observance will commence at 11 a.m. at the Rosberg Flag Poles, across the street from City Hall, and close with a moment of silence. There will also be a special unveiling of an orange bench donated by the City’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Virtual speakers series, hosted by the Niagara Falls History Museum 

The Niagara Falls History Museum will be hosting two virtual events leading into National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, on Thursday, September 28 at 7 p.m. and Friday, September 29 at 3 p.m. Speakers Dr. Pamela Williamson and Richard Hill will be exploring the topics of the Truth and Reconciliation Report, and Indigenous Nationhood. These virtual events are intended to provide a greater understanding and are free to attend.
