NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The City of Niagara Falls is advising residents, businesses, and visitors of upcoming infrastructure and utility work along Clifton Hill and Oneida Lane to support the installation of new Smart Pole technology.
The Niagara Regional Broadband Network (NRBN) will be installing underground conduit infrastructure to support 15 new Smart Poles, as part of a project funded by Rogers and managed by NRBN and Urban Environmental Management Inc. (UEM). The engineered design drawings have been approved and permitted by the City of Niagara Falls. Construction will be completed by contractor Avertex using an open-trench installation method.
Work is scheduled to begin the week of January 12, 2026, and is expected to continue through March Break. The project will be staged from an approved work area within the HOCO parking lot.
During construction:
- One lane of traffic will be temporarily closed during the day with traffic control in place.
- Traffic lanes will be reopened at the end of each workday.
- Pedestrian access to storefronts will be maintained at all times.
- Businesses will remain open throughout construction.
- Trench restoration will occur daily as work progresses.
After March Break, the remaining work, such as installing cables and Smart Poles, should be less disruptive and will be coordinated with the local BIA.
The City will continue to work with project partners to minimize disruptions and keep everyone informed as the project progresses. Estimated completion is mid-to-late spring, weather permitting.
What is Smart Pole technology?
A Smart Pole is a modern, multi-purpose streetlight or utility pole designed to support improved wireless connectivity and future-ready infrastructure. In this case, the Smart Poles will house compact cellular equipment that helps improve mobile coverage and network capacity in high-traffic areas.
Smart Poles are designed to blend into the streetscape and reduce visual clutter by integrating technology into a single structure rather than adding separate equipment or towers. They do not automatically include cameras or surveillance technology, and any features installed are subject to municipal approvals and applicable regulations.
