NOMINATED BY THE NIAGARA FALLS COMMUNITY OUTREACH SOUP KITCHEN

When we heard that Costco would open in Niagara Falls, we applied to receive their donated goods program. We were approved and given a weekly appointed pick-up day. We receive produce, baked goods, protein, drinks, snack bars—pretty much anything sold in the store. Early on, we made it known to the fantastic warehouse staff that we would take any donations other days. Word spread, and Costco St. Catharines calls us as well. The volume of items received has been overwhelming. Our clients have significantly benefited from the generosity of this outstanding company and the friendly warehouse staff who designate the donations. In our efforts to reduce hunger in Niagara Falls, Costco has played a massive part in keeping our food costs low as our number of clients steadily increases.

While Willoughby Historical Society has been on hiatus for the past two years, that has not stopped Tammy Boucher, the owner, from giving to the community. The food drive, clothing drive, someone in need of a meal, Tammy is there helping the community. Need door prizes, help with fundraising, Tammy and her Creeksides team are there. A cafe and ice cream shop that serves the community first.

Jessica Potts, President of Inspired Strategy Group Inc., has been a part of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory family since 2017. As part of our Leadership Training, Jessica has created many fun opportunities for our team to become self-aware and develop the skills needed to be a highly functioning team. Her enthusiastic and empowering methods have allowed MYAC to develop shared goals and strategic plans. We are grateful that Jessica willingly shares her time, energy, and enthusiasm with us. Kettlebells Niagara has raised over $4,000 in donations for their annual Tug of War community event supporting Project SHARE. They also participate in our Stuff the Bus  challenge every year and reigning corporate champions for the past three years. In 2020 they raised over $40,000 in food and monetary donations supporting Project SHARE’s Christmas Program that helps more than 3,800 persons have a happy holiday season with food and gifts for their children.

When Rima Hindo moved to Niagara over four years ago to take over the accounting business, she was contacted about being involved in Man A Mile. She was eager to help. Rima had a keen interest in community involvement and fundraising for worthy causes within our community. Her company has supported us financially, helped recruit teams, and helped us find new businesses that would become sponsors. Rima has also become a supporter of the work St. John Ambulance does in Niagara Falls.

Through Lococo’s, Erin Lococo has provided us with fruit for the runners and walkers at our event as they finish the Terry Fox Run, gift certificates for our Silent Auction, and donated generously to the BBQ we run at the City Garage Sale where we raised funds for the Terry Fox Run. Since Paul Bright settled in Niagara more than 20 years ago, he has been involved in the community in various capacities. He always has a willing supporter as a private citizen and a corporate donor. Over the last few years, in particular, he has supported our Club’s efforts to show appreciation to the Front Line workers during COVID. We were able to provide weekly lunches to various workplaces (hospitals, clinics, grocery stores) and coffee and snacks to the vaccination clinics. His generosity does not end here - he is always quick to step up to help anytime.

Oz has been a Farmers’ Market volunteer for the past two years. He has been thoughtful, dynamic and consistent support to our Market operations. Rain or shine, Oz always goes out of his way to create a positive, welcoming environment at our local Market. He is always willing to stay a little longer if required, assist in setting up and take down and is known to philosophize every once in a while. We appreciate all he has contributed to creating a thriving market throughout his community service.

For almost 10 years, Gail Barnes has been Volunteering for the Niagara Falls Canada Day Celebration and the Niagara Falls Santa Claus Parade. She is always willing to help out in any way and will proudly carry a parade banner along the parade route and have some fun while participating. The City of Niagara Falls is grateful to have Gail as a dedicated and reliable volunteer.

CHERLYN BOROWSKI

NOMINATED BY SCOUTS CANADA, NIAGARA AREA

Cherlyn typically works with the Cub Scout Section, youth in the 8 to 11 range, at the 22nd Niagara Group. She shows excellent leadership involving our youth in fun learning activities. Parents and fellow volunteers admire her gifts for listening to the youth with compassion and a happy attitude. During the pandemic, she helped engage the youth with her cheerful attitude and encouraging words. Even when meeting virtually, she is always “raring to go” and ready to help out. Many awards have recognized her Scouting service, including the Long Service Medal and the Medal of Merit.

BETHANY BOYLE

Bethany has been responsible for looking after the sponsorship revenue and team fees, paying the necessary bills and making the end of race donation. She has also helped set up the race mile markers, the race’s food distribution day, and setting up the awards presentation. She has been a consistent volunteer year after year.

RON CHARBONNEAU

Ron has been the Board chair for 6+ years, co-founder of Niagara Falls’s special event, Springlicious. He is also the founder of cruising on the Q, a weekly car show on Queen Street. You will find Ron volunteering his time in setting up, taking down, public speaking, and  running the events on special occasions. He also attends Board and Committee meetings and operates the Christmas window decorating competition every year. He is passionate about revitalizing Downtown Niagara Falls, and it shows in his time and dedication to our board.

CLAYTON (CORKY) CORCORAN

Corky, a dedicated member of our Executive Committee, has raised close to $25,000 this year through an ongoing bottle drive. The funds have enabled our branch to remain open and support the community despite the pandemic. Corky also promotes our branch to the public, recruits new members, and helps develop new leaders.

Dave Cowan has been an active volunteer with the Supervised Parenting Time program for 20 consecutive years. He has been and is a tremendous asset to the team, helping families to connect and providing a safe space for them to do so. He has been consistent, reliable, dedicated, and a mentor to new volunteers. He has been able to connect to male clients in the program, providing positive role modelling and a sense of belonging in a mainly female-dominated program. MICHAEL D'AMICO

NOMINATED BY CLUB ITALIA

Mike has been a long-time volunteer at Club Italia. His dedication and commitment to the Club are noticed by all who work with him. An outstanding volunteer. Mike has put in over 25,000 hours of volunteer time during the past 20 months of lockdown and continues to do so. Even during the pandemic, he worked in the kitchen with the Chef volunteering his time every week for the Curbside Takeouts and continues to come to the Club to assist the Chef for events.

LISA DANO

NOMINATED BY PROJECT SHARE OF NIAGARA FALLS

Lisa Dano is an asset to Project SHARE. She has been a Project SHARE volunteer since 2014. When the pandemic hit us, Project SHARE was forced to change our distribution methods to keep staff, clients and volunteers safe. Lisa immediately volunteered to come in every day, reducing the number of people coming and going through the building, clocking in 955 hours this year alone. Lisa is compassionate, patient and kind with families coming to us for emergency food services. Volunteers like Lisa are the backbone of our agency, and we certainly couldn’t manage without her!

MANOJ EDAMANA

NOMINATED BY THE NIAGARA MALAYALEE ASSOCIATION

As President of the Niagara Malayalee Association, Manoj is continually giving of his time. He has promoted blood donations through Canadian Blood Services, encouraged positive awareness about the COVID-19 vaccine, helped people schedule their vaccinations, arranged recreation and community integration programs, supported international students, organized a Tug of War Competition, and much more. Professionally, Manoj is a social worker and uses his skills to keep the community positive and successful.

BARBARA GREENWOOD

NOMINATED BY THE ROTARY CLUB OF NIAGARA FALLS

Barb stepped up to be President for a second time, with many plans. Instead, COVID shut everything down, although we were able to host our Trivia Fundraiser in February just before the pandemic cancelled everything else. Barb pulled the Club together and we started ZOOM meetings and socials. She spearheaded numerous activities to spread kindness and meet needs during the lockdown. We provided tablets to the COVID ward at the hospital, enabling patients to connect with loved ones. We donated supplies to the Eventide home. Later we sent lunches to front-line workers and vaccine clinic workers.

Jessica has been a valued member of our committee for the last nine years. She has helps run our silent auction, organizes the Terry Fox walk at Sacred Heart School, assists with registration on Terry Fox Run day, and volunteers at our trivia night, Kick-off BBQ and car wash. A true Terry Foxer! Jessica is a valued member of our Terry Fox Committee, not only for what she does but for the positive energy she brings our way. We are blessed to have Jessica as part of our team!

Madeline Mantler is a dedicated, committed and reliable individual, is fun, outgoing and personable, and compassionate and empathic. She has been instrumental in her ability to connect with our Clients and Care Partners to get them up and running on various virtual platforms, enabling them to continue to participate in our programs throughout the pandemic. Madeline is also the co-host of our Brain Wave Café bringing people living with dementia and their care partners together. Madeline’s time volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Society Niagara Region has positively impacted our clients, and she greatly appreciated our organization.

For more than 11 years, Elizabeth McLean has been volunteering weekly in the Stabler Centre Residence of Hospice Niagara. Liz has been helping residents live well by providing exceptional and compassionate, client centred care to individuals at the end of life. Liz has volunteered to serve afternoon tea for over a decade, bringing refreshments, comfort and conversation to Hospice Niagara residents. Liz is quick to smile, and her warm laughter puts people at ease. Hospice Niagara is fortunate to have such an outstanding, dedicated volunteer as Liz. This recognition is well deserved! Mary, you are a true gift to Heartland Forest. Keeping everyone safe is a priority at The Soup Kitchen in these very odd COVID times with the rise in alcohol, drug abuse, and mental illness. To ensure safety, security volunteers are at the door for lunch service. Ryan Rivers joined us in 2019 after graduating from Niagara College in Police Foundations; he has attended Brock University majoring in Sociology. He first volunteered in the kitchen, then decided to join the security team and quickly became a team leader. Ryan naturally builds rapport with our clients, staff, and other volunteers. He is reliable, punctual, and has recently assumed the duties of scheduling, recruiting and training other volunteers. Thank you, Ryan, for being a fantastic volunteer and asset to The Soup Kitchen.

Emily and her father first began volunteering together in 2013 when Emily was just seven years old. Technically too young to officially volunteer, she filled the spot of an elf on  Santa’s Float. Emily had such a great experience that she volunteered for the Canada Day Celebrations and has not stopped volunteering! Since then, she inspired the entire family to get involved, and they have helped with both Canada Day and Santa Claus parades for almost 10 years! They are always willing to help out!

Erin has been a board volunteer member and helped co-race direct the Canada Day 5 km race, getting corporate sponsorship, looking after entries, and assisting in planning the annual event. Erin also helped start a group of beginner runners that worked up to entering the Canada Day event, and the group still meets and is growing.

NOMINATED BY THE STAMFORD CENTRE VOLUNTEER FIREMEN'S ASSOCIATION

Frank is a life member of the Stamford Centre Volunteer Firemen’s Association and joined our Club in 1980. He served as our association president in 1992 and has served on many of our committees necessary for day-to-day operations, such as the house committee, the park committee, and special events. Frank is responsible for running our strawberry shortcake booth at the annual Firemen’s carnival, held at Firemen’s Park.

ANDREA WIGGINS

Andrea has been our registrar for many years. This is a job that takes dedication, a lot of time and patience. She is always helpful and happy to help. She is responsible for collecting fees, organizing teams, connecting with coaches, and so much more! Besides helping in this capacity, Andrea has also been an assistant coach with our organization for many years. The Niagara basketball community continues to benefit from her willingness to help.
