The word Cemetery is derived from the Latin term "sleeping space". The primary purpose of cemeteries is the dignified disposition of human remains in accordance with provincial statutes and municipal by-laws. They also serve as historical, memorial, spiritual, aesthetic and passive recreation greenspaces within the urban environment.
Goals
Customer Service:
To provide quality, cost efficient support services to the public, bereaved families and death care service providers, including funeral directors, monument dealers and vault suppliers.
Cemetery Operations:
To administer, maintain and operate municipal cemeteries in accordance with Provincial, Municipal, Department, Division and Section Legislation, By-laws, Policies, Procedures, Standards and Programs.
Cemetery Improvement:
To improve existing cemetery grounds and buildings in accordance with the Recreation & Culture Ten Year Development and Improvement Program.
Cemetery Development:
To develop cemetery lands in accordance with the Recreation & Culture Ten Year Development and Improvement Program.
