Important: To be legally married in Ontario, you must first get a marriage licence and then have a ceremony performed by an authorized official.
Ceremony details
- When: Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays). The City Clerk may perform ceremonies outside these hours if available.
- Where: City Hall, 4310 Queen Street, Niagara Falls, in Council Chambers or outside, weather permitting.
- Witnesses: You need two witnesses. The City can provide witnesses, or you can bring your own.
- Same-day services: Available upon request and availability. It's recommended to schedule a personalized ceremony in advance.

Booking your ceremony
- Get a marriage licence: Available at the City Clerk’s office, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Schedule your ceremony: It must occur within 3 months of getting your marriage licence. Call 905-356-7521 ext. 0 or email [email protected]. Full payment is required to hold your date.
Fees
On September 10, 2024, Niagara Falls City Council approved the following fees for civil marriage ceremonies. Fees are subject to change.
- Ceremony at City Hall
- $750 + HST
- $450 + HST for Niagara Falls residents
- Ceremony outside business hours or off-site
- $750 + HST
- $450 + HST for Niagara Falls residents
- Rehearsal (optional, if requested): $75 + HST
- Witnesses (if needed, provided by the City): $25 + HST per witness, non-refundable.
Payment and cancellation
- Full payment is required to reserve your date.
- If you cancel within 14 days of your ceremony, you will only be refunded 50% of the ceremony fees (plus HST).
Frequently asked questions
Who can perform civil marriages and religious marriages?
- Civil marriages in Niagara Falls can be performed by an Ontario judge, justice of the peace, or municipal clerk. The City Clerk and designated officials are authorized to perform these.
- The City Clerk has no authority to perform religious ceremonies.
- Only an official from a recognized religion, authorized by the Office of the Registrar General, can perform a religious marriage in Ontario. To check if the person performing your marriage is approved, visit Registered Religious Officials or call Service Ontario at 1-800-461-2156.
Can guests attend?
- Yes, Council Chambers can seat up to 30 guests and is fully accessible.
Can we bring our flowers and decorations?
- Yes, small items like bouquets and corsages are allowed. However, confetti, rice, and bubbles are not allowed.
Are photos and videos allowed?
- Yes, if it does not disrupt the ceremony.
How do I get a marriage licence?
- Obtain one at the City Clerk’s office in City Hall, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once issued the license is effective immediately and is valid for three months anywhere in Ontario.

Can I use a licence from another municipality?
- Yes, bring your completed licence and valid photo ID.
How much advance notice is required?
- It depends on availability. Secure your date with payment. You can book up to 6 months in advance.
Can I book a ceremony even if I don't live in Niagara Falls?
- Yes, bring a valid Ontario marriage licence and photo ID.
Can the Clerk perform a ceremony at another location?
- Yes. If we cannot attend, we will provide a list of local officiants.
