The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Awards celebrate individuals, groups, and businesses that make our community more inclusive and welcoming for everyone. If you know someone creating positive change, you can nominate them for an award!


About the DEI awards

The City’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Advisory Committee is excited to announce the annual DEI Awards. These awards celebrate individuals, groups, and businesses that make a difference in our community through their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The mayor and the committee chair/co-chair will present the awards each year in June during a City Council meeting.

How to nominate

  • Nominations open: October 1 of each year
  • Nominations close: April 30 of each year
  • Review period: Month of May
  • Winners announced: June at City Council

Award categories

There are three categories for nominations:

  1. Workplace DEI Award
  2. Community DEI Award
  3. Youth Empowerment DEI Award

Workplace DEI award

This award honours a local business committed to creating an inclusive and equitable workplace. To be considered, the business must demonstrate the following:

  1. Diversity representation: A diverse workforce, including leadership positions, recruitment strategies that promote diversity, and programs that create an inclusive work environment where employees feel valued and respected
  2. Training and education: Regular DEI training for all employees and efforts to raise awareness about diversity, equity, and inclusion
  3. Leadership commitment: Strong support from leadership, with resources dedicated to DEI efforts
  4. Measurement and accountability: Use of metrics to track progress and transparency in sharing results
  5. Employee feedback: Positive feedback from employees and opportunities for them to provide input on DEI efforts

Community DEI award

This award recognizes individuals or organizations that have made lasting contributions to the local community. The winner will have demonstrated a deep commitment to improving the lives of community members, especially by fostering a stronger, more connected local Niagara area. Key criteria include:

  1. Community engagement: Active involvement with local communities, including those from diverse backgrounds, through programs or initiatives that promote DEI
  2. Collaborative impact: Successful partnerships that lead to positive changes in the community
  3. Effective communication: Consistent communication and involvement with the community, understanding local needs
  4. Sustainable engagement: Proven track record of commitment to community projects beyond short-term efforts

Youth Empowerment DEI award

This award celebrates local young people (21 and younger). To be eligible, the individual or group must:

  1. Advocacy and communication: Advocate for policies or programs that support diverse youth, promoting their rights and needs
  2. Leadership commitment: Show compassion, service, and leadership in youth-focused projects
  3. Education and awareness: Make a positive impact by educating others, raising awareness, or fundraising
  4. Community engagement: Engage with peers from diverse backgrounds and ensure their voices are heard. The nominee’s community service should go beyond what the school requires
