Historical Notes

WAR OF 1812 HEROINE LAURA SECORD (1775-1868) BOUGHT THE HOUSE IN 1841 AND LIVED THERE THE REST OF HER LIFE, OPERATING A PRIVATE SCHOOL TO SUPPORT HERSELF. THE HOUSE WAS FIRST OWNED BY JAMES CUMMINGS, A MERCHANT AND LANDOWNER WHO WAS THE FIRST REEVE OF CHIPPAWA AND WHOSE FATHER THOMAS WAS THE FIRST SETTLER IN 1783.

Architectural Notes

THE HOUSE REPRESENTS A MODEST UPPER CANADIAN STYLE COTTAGE OF THE MID 19TH CENTURY. MOST OF ITS DECORATION IS CONCENTRATED ON THE ENTRANCEWAY, WHICH FEATURES TWO FLANKING DORIC COLUMNS SUPPORTING AN ENTABLATURE, SIDE- LIGHTS AND A TRANSOM NOW ENCLOSED BY A MODERN PORCH. THE ROOF AND INTERIOR WERE REBUILT AFTER A FIRE IN 1930
