Outdoor Rinks
Enjoy free outdoor skating and hockey at rinks across the city! These natural rinks are open during the winter, as long as the weather stays cold. The ice needs several days of -10°C or colder to stay frozen and safe. Please note these rinks are not supervised and are maintained by volunteers.
Outdoor rink locations and hours
Rinks are open daily from dawn to dusk during the winter season. You can skate or play pick-up hockey at these natural outdoor rinks:
- John N Allan Park, 6980 Kalar Road
- Maple Street Park, 5100 Maple Street
- Mount Carmel Park, 7806 Mount Carmel Boulevard
- Preakness Park, 7857 Preakness Street
- Fernwood Park, 9260 Hendershot Boulevard
- Robert F. Keighan Park, 8030 Beaverton Boulevard
- Chippawa West Park, 9327 Emerald Avenue
Want to volunteer?
We always need volunteers to help keep the rinks in great shape!
If you live nearby and can shovel snow or flood the rink, we’d love your help.
The City provides:
- Access to water
- Hoses and nozzles
- Signage
- Training to help you make good ice
Duties:
- During the winter season for as little as one to several hours per week depending on weather conditions
- The goal is to have two to three volunteers per rink to take turns to help with tasks
- Casual maintenance as needed, such as ice flooding, helping shovel snow off the ice rink, and ice repair
- It is ideal to have people who live within short walking distance of the park
- This is an unsupervised volunteer position
Report a concern at a park
While the City doesn’t maintain outdoor rinks, please tell us about any other park concerns, like safety hazards, messes, vandalism, or accessibility issues in the park, so we can take care of them.
Outdoor rink rules
Please follow these simple rules to stay safe and have fun.
- Rinks are not supervised. Use at your own risk – ice may be uneven or rough
- Check the ice before skating or playing hockey
- Rinks may close during bad weather or if the ice is in poor condition
- Wear helmets and safety gear
- Supervise children at all times
- No food, drinks, glass, or pets on the ice
- No smoking, vaping, alcohol, or drugs
- Be respectful. These are free public spaces for everyone to enjoy. Please follow the RZone Policy to help keep rinks safe, welcoming, and free from vandalism or inappropriate behaviour.
