Free tree giveaway

Annually in the spring, the Environmental Action Committee offers potted trees (1 to 2 gallons) to Niagara Falls residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Please check back for the 2027 date.Thank you to everyone who came out on May 30, 2026, for a free tree.

Trees are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-orders are not available. Arrive early to secure your free tree!
During a scheduled event, pick up your tree in person and show proof of Niagara Falls residency (photo ID or government documentation)
Only one tree is provided per property
You are responsible for planting and caring for your tree
The tree must be planted within the Niagara Falls city limits on your private property

You can pick from a variety of tree species. Here are some of the types of trees we may offer:

Utility locates: Before digging, submit a utility locate request with Ontario One Call. This free service helps locate underground utilities like gas lines, water pipes, and electrical cables.
Overhead electrical lines: For information on overhead and underground clearances when planting trees, please visit Niagara Peninsula Energy
Do not plant the tree within the City’s right-of-way

Tree planting and pollinator garden installations

Get involved in planting trees and creating pollinator gardens with the Environmental Action Committee! A limited number of volunteer spots will be available, offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Check back for future events!

Community Curbside Giveaway

Give your stuff a second life and keep things out of the landfill. Twice a year, you can help others in your community by putting your gently used items at the curb.

Community Clean Up

Join the fun and help keep our city looking its best! Grab your friends, family, or coworkers and pitch in to clean up litter from boulevards, parks, trails, walkways, and even cemeteries.

Protect our planet!

The next Earth Hour is Saturday, March 20, 2027, from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

Join millions around the world for Earth Hour by turning off your lights for one hour! This global movement inspires individuals, businesses, and governments to take action for the environment and show their commitment to our planet.

Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million people and over 2,000 businesses switched off their lights to take a stand against climate change. Since then, it has grown into a worldwide event, with landmarks like the CN Tower, Rome’s Coliseum, and the Niagara Waterfalls going dark to raise awareness about environmental sustainability.

In Niagara Falls, the City will turn off non-essential lighting at its facilities, including the nightly illumination of Niagara Falls, to support this climate action initiative. Essential lights for safety and street lighting will remain on.

How you can participate

Turn off non-essential lights at home or work for one hour
Unplug electronics and reduce energy use
Spread the word! Encourage friends and family to join

Share your green story. Inspire others by posting about your eco-friendly habits, like composting, growing your own food, or reducing waste
Make eco-friendly choices every day:
- Walk or bike instead of driving
- Reduce electricity use—turn off lights and unplug devices
- Play board games instead of watching TV
- Start composting and reduce food waste
- Plant pollinator-friendly flowers or an Earth Day legacy tree in your yard
- Ditch single-use plastics and opt for reusable options
- Use cloth diapers if you’re a new parent
- Think before you print—save paper!
