Naming and Renaming of City Property

The City of Niagara Falls has a policy that explains how you can request the naming or renaming of City-owned properties, including parks, open spaces, sports fields, and playgrounds. You can also learn about honourary street naming and how to apply.

What is commemorative naming?

Commemorative naming is a way to honour a person, group, or organization that has:

  • Significant contribution to the quality of life and well-being of the City of Niagara Falls
  • Perceived as a role model and open to close scrutiny relative to their character, integrity and values
  • Demonstrated excellence, courage or exceptional service to the citizens of the City of Niagara Falls
  • A strong historical or cultural connection to Niagara Falls
  • Strong contribution toward environmental preservation, conservation or enhancement of the City
  • Major contribution made to the acquisition, development or conveyance of the land or building in question and/or its subsequent development
  • Direct relationship or association that exists between the place or former place of residence of the person or group and the facility/park to be named

This type of naming is usually done without any financial payment or sponsorship, but it sometimes considers significant donations, such as land, buildings, or financial contributions.

How to submit a naming request for city owned properties

To suggest a name or request a renaming of city-owned properties (not including streets) :

  1. Review the full Naming and Renaming of City Property Policy for details on eligibility and criteria
  2. Complete the Naming and Renaming of City Property Application Form

Staff will conduct a careful, ethical, and historical review, including consultation with committees of council, local organizations, and the public. City Council has the final approval, and City staff will let you know the decision.

Honourary Street Naming Program

Program overview

Street names are an important part of the community fabric, as street names contribute to creating a sense of place, community and identity within Niagara Falls. Accordingly, street naming requests need to be considered and selected with care and purpose.

The Honourary Street Name program is a symbolic way to honour an individual, group or organization that has had a positive impact on the city and is recognized for their accomplishments without causing disruption or inconvenience to the residents or businesses on a street.

The Honourary Street Name is added as a topper sign to the existing street name sign for a five (5) year term, and it can be renewed for a further five (5) year term. The Honourary street name does not require any change in the legal street name, therefore, resulting in no address changes, disruption or cost to existing residents or businesses located on the street.

To date, Council has granted Honourary Street Names to Mr. Gord Singleton and Mr. Rick Rose.
