Stamford Green Heritage Columbarium

The Stamford Green Heritage Columbarium sits inside the historic Old St. John's Church on Portage Road. This heritage-designated building offers indoor columbaria and is accessible year-round. It also includes a small space for chapel services.

Location and history

Built in 1825, Old St. John’s Church served the community for over a century before it was deconsecrated in 1962. The Old St. John’s Stamford Heritage Association stepped in to restore the building and secured its designation as a historically significant site.

In 1990, the Association repurposed the church by opening a Columbarium, a sacred space where families can entomb the cremated remains of their loved ones in designated niches.

In September 2004, the City took over the administration and operation of the Columbarium through an agreement with the Association. While the City manages daily operations, the Association remains actively involved as an advisor and continues its heritage work at Old St. John’s Church.

Through fundraising efforts, the Association helps maintain and improve the historic site.

The Columbarium is active and continues to serve families today. To the north, behind the old church, is St. John’s Church Cemetery
