NIAGARA FALLS, ON - As we head into the holiday weekend, the City of Niagara Falls wants to remind everyone of the importance of properly disposing of fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Improper disposal can lead to serious problems such as clogged pipes, sewage backups, and property and environmental damage.
Please remember:
- FOG can include butter, olive oil, gravy, and meat fat.
- Do not pour these substances down the drain or toilet, as it can cause significant plumbing issues, such as clogged drains and sewer lines and raw sewage back-ups into your basement—all of which may result in costly repairs to your home.
Safe Disposal Tips:
- Let FOG cool and harden before disposal.
- Scrape it into your green bin.
- Alternatively, discard cooled liquids into a container (like a can or bowl).
- Use a paper towel to wipe greasy residue and place it in the green bin.
Please note: Liquid cooking oil cannot be placed curbside. For more significant amounts (over 1 litre) from practices like deep frying, store the oil in a sealed container labelled "cooking oil" and take it to a household hazardous waste depot.
Depositing anything capable of obstructing the flow of, or interfering with the operation of, a sewer is enforceable through the Niagara Region’s Sewer-use By-law.
Together, we can keep our community and environment safe! Thank you for your cooperation.
