NIAGARA FALLS, ON - Do you know a dedicated community volunteer? The City of Niagara Falls is accepting nominations for the annual Volunteer Recognition Awards until Friday, October 6, 2023, at 4 p.m. via https://niagarafalls.ca/awards

The Niagara Falls Volunteer Recognition program provides an excellent opportunity to honour and celebrate the countless outstanding volunteers in our community. This year’s awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 7 at The Exchange – Niagara Falls’ new arts & culture hub.

The awards are divided into the following categories:

Special Awards

These awards are designed as once-in-a-lifetime recognition awards. Anyone can submit nominations for the Special Awards, including organizations and the general public (with the exceptions of the BeNF Award, selected by the Mayor's Office, and the Doug Austin Award, selected by The Niagara Falls Review).

Only one person/organization/business for each of the award categories will be selected to receive the award each year. Recipients must be Niagara Falls residents/be based in Niagara Falls, or have spent the vast majority of their volunteer service in Niagara Falls.

One winner will be selected each year for the following awards:

Stamford Collegiate Alumni Association Award in Memory of Barbara Frum
Presented to an individual or organization that has enhanced the quality of our lives by virtue of their outstanding contribution to fostering and developing Arts and Cultural opportunities in Niagara Falls. Barbara Frum was a well-known and respected journalist, interviewer, and commentator in print, radio, and television.

Civic Pride Award
Presented to those residents who demonstrate a true commitment to our community and help make the City a better place in which to live, by making a difference to the daily lives of residents in Niagara Falls.

Environment Award

George MacPhail Award

The award is made in memory of George MacPhail, a former Niagara Falls elementary school vice-principal and a long-time, dedicated member of the City of Niagara Falls Recreation Committee.

Senior Volunteer of the Year Award
Presented to a senior resident, 60 years of age or older, who demonstrates a true commitment to our community by their volunteer work. The service that they provide goes well above and beyond and makes a significant impact on the community.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Award
Presented to a youth resident, 21 years of age or younger, who demonstrates a true commitment to our community by their volunteer work. The service that they provide goes well above and beyond any volunteer service required by their school.

BeNF Awards (selected and presented each year by the Mayor’s Office)
Presented each year by the Mayor's Office. The BeNF Award recognizes people who are proud to be a part of the fabric that makes up Niagara Falls and give back in a generous way to fellow residents.

Doug Austin Award (selected and presented each year by The Niagara Falls Review)
This award is sponsored by the Niagara Falls Review and is given to a person in the community in recognition of dedicated volunteer service and accomplishment in sports.
The award is made to honour the memory of Doug Austin, who was a longtime and respected Sports Editor with the newspaper.
Although the Niagara Falls Review makes the final choice of the award winner, citizens are encouraged to pass on their suggestions to the current sports editor of the newspaper.

Individual and Corporate Sponsor Awards

These awards are designed for Niagara Falls-based organizations to recognize one Individual and/or one Corporate Sponsor annually. Only Niagara Falls organizations may submit nominations, not the general public.

Nominated Individuals and Corporate Sponsors will automatically receive the award as long as they have not received one in the previous 3 years.
