Municipal Heritage Committee

Under Section 28 (1) of the Ontario Heritage Act, Council may establish a Municipal Heritage Committee to advise and assist Council on matters relating to the Municipal Heritage Register, the designation of properties, and heritage conservation districts.

Responsibilities

The Committee’s responsibilities generally relate to the following areas of activity:

• To advise and assist the Council on all matters relating to Parts IV and V of the Ontario Heritage Act;
• To advise and assist the Council on any other matters relating to buildings and areas of architectural and/or historical significance;
• To establish criteria for the evaluation of properties or architectural and/or historical value or interest;
• To prepare and maintain a list of Heritage Resource Properties and areas worthy of conservation;
• To advise Council on the means of conserving heritage properties and areas;
• To advise Council on current heritage conservation legislation and to assist Council in the preparation of municipal heritage policies and guidelines to conserve heritage properties and areas;
• To implement programs and activities to increase public awareness and knowledge of heritage conservation issues;
• To participate with and advise property owners on the best methods of preservation of historic materials and architectural features; and,
• To review and process grant applications for the restoration of designated properties.

Committee membership

The Committee consists of one Councillor and seven to nine public members, as appointed by Council.

Term: Committee members serve a term of four years, 2023 through 2026.
