Your water service pipe connects your home to the City’s water supply. The City owns the section from the watermain on the street to your property line. You own the section from the property line into your home.
Water Shut Off and Turn On
A water shut-off or turn-on request is made when you need to temporarily stop or start the flow of water to your property.
Need your water turned on or off?
You can ask for a water shut off or turn on in a few easy ways:
- Complete the online form
- Phone 905-356-7521
- Email your request to service@niagarafalls.ca
Note: Please provide the service address and the date and time you are requesting the service. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is recommended.
Reasons why the City should turn the water on or off
You might need us to turn off the water at the property line if:
- There is an emergency leak or burst pipe
- You are doing major repairs, renovations, demolition or plumbing work on your property
- Your property will be vacant for a prolonged period due to a move, seasonal vacation or business closure. It is a good idea to shut the water off at the street to avoid any potential problems with the service lines running up to and in the property. Property owners should be aware that an internal shut-off can become faulty and result in unintended usage. To be safe, it is recommended to shut the water service off at the street by a City Technician.
You might need us to turn the water back on if:
- You just moved into a property, and the water was shut off before you arrived
- The water was shut off for repairs or maintenance, and the work is now done
Fees
You can find the latest fees on the Schedule of Fees page.
- During normal working hours, there is a fee for turning the water off, and a separate fee to turn the water back on
- If the water turn-off and turn-on occur on the same day, during regular business hours, there is only one fee
- Outside of normal working hours, an overtime fee is applied
- Maintenance-related requests will be invoiced to the property owner (these charges will not generate on your water bill)
- A long-term shut-off/turn-on request will be added to your water and sewer bill. This includes seasonal or vacant property-related requests.
