Service Line Warranties of Canada

To help protect against unexpected repair costs, the City of Niagara Falls has partnered with Service Line Warranties of Canada (SLWC). They offer optional repair plans for water and sewer service lines on your private property. This program raises awareness about homeowner responsibilities while providing a solution for those who wish to participate.

Understanding water and sewer service lines

Water and sewer service lines connect your home to the City’s water and wastewater systems. As a homeowner, you’re responsible for maintaining and repairing the portion of these lines on your property. If a leak, break, or clog occurs, you must hire a plumber or contractor and cover the repair costs. These emergencies can happen without warning and may lead to expensive repairs.

The lifespan of service lines depends on factors like construction materials, soil conditions, usage, and nearby trees. Basic homeowner’s insurance doesn’t typically cover these repairs. Check with your provider to understand your coverage options, including any add-ons.

  • Independent management: The program is managed by SLWC and uses no public funds
  • No solicitation: SLWC does not solicit in person or by phone
  • City’s role: The City of Niagara Falls does not guarantee or take responsibility for SLWC’s work or performance

Frequently asked questions

Service Line Warranties of Canada (SLWC) is an independent company separate from your local utility or community. SLWC is partnered with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), and plans are available in over 70 municipalities across Ontario.

There are several benefits the voluntary SLWC program brings to Niagara Falls and its residents, including:

Many policies don’t cover repairs to your water and sewer service lines. Some only cover the damage caused by the failed line but not the cost to repair the line itself. Check with your provider for details.

Yes, coverage includes the repair or replacement of either water service or well lines, and septic lines.

  • The City of Niagara Falls allows SLWC to use its logo in communications to indicate that there is a formal relationship in place and to let residents know that the offering is legitimate
  • It is for the residents’ benefit and has the approval of the City of Niagara Falls
  • All mailings SLWC sends to Niagara Falls residents are first reviewed and approved by City staff
  • All SLWC materials clearly state that the services the company offers are voluntary and that they are offered by SLWC, a private company that is separate from the City of Niagara Falls
