Plastic bottles, straws and stir sticks

“We led the way as one of the first municipalities in Canada to establish a single-use plastic bottle ban, and this is one more step to level up our environmental responsibility! Thank you to our committed volunteer committees, the Mayor’s Youth Advisory and the Environmental Action Committees, for looking ahead and leading us in the right direction!”
Jim Diodati, Mayor

  • We have not sold plastic beverage bottles at city-owned buildings, recreation centers, parks, and other facilities since 2009
  • We have eliminated the use of plastic straws and stir sticks in all city-owned facilities since 2019

Waste reduction in the workplace

Take the pledge to improve how your business reduces waste. Learn more on the Niagara Region Rethink Your Waste website.

Blue communities project

Niagara Falls is a Blue Community, which means water belongs to no one, and everyone is responsible for it. Since water is so important to life, it should be managed with fairness, shared responsibly, and cared for to protect it for nature and future generations.

Here’s what we do:

  • Recognize water as a human right
  • Promote publicly financed, owned and operated water and wastewater services
  • Ban the sale of bottled water in public facilities and at municipal events

Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority oversees the Niagara Peninsula watershed, which includes Niagara Falls. Their website provides:

  • Detailed information about the Niagara Peninsula watershed
  • Locations and recreational opportunities at conservation areas
  • Guidelines for permits and regulations
  • Updates on events and ways to get involved

Discover how you can contribute to protecting our watershed and enjoy the natural beauty of conservation areas.

Water Source Protection Plan

Check our Niagara Peninsula Source Water Protection Plan to learn how our drinking water is protected from the source.

The purpose of the weeping tile removal assistance program (WRAP) is to disconnect weeping-tile from the sanitary sewer.
