Fireworks and Pyrotechnics

Fireworks can be fun, but safety is key. Always follow the rules when using fireworks.

Fireworks by-law and permit

Learn more about the rules for setting off fireworks and pyrotechnic special effects in our Fireworks By-law.

A permit is required if you are going to sell fireworks or host a public display. All applications must be received no less than thirty (30) days prior to the scheduled sale or display event.

Complete the Fireworks Vendor Permit Application. Requirements for applying to host a display can be found in Section 8 of the Fireworks By-law.

If you have any questions regarding fireworks, please contact the Fire Prevention Office at 905-356-7521 ext. 2207 or email fireprevention@niagarafalls.ca.

Permitted holidays for setting off fireworks

You can set off fireworks only on the approved holidays, the day before, and three days after, as long as you follow all by-law rules. Fireworks can only be set off between 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm. If the Fire Chief authorizes an active fire ban, you cannot set off any fireworks, even during the permitted holiday time frame.

These holidays are recognized under the by-law:

  • Chinese New Year
  • Victoria Day
  • Canada Day
  • Diwali

The Fire Chief may approve special permits for events outside of these dates.

When can fireworks be sold?

Fireworks can only be sold during the following periods:

  • May 1 and ending on July 6
  • Seven days preceding the Chinese New Year
  • Seven days preceding Diwali
  • Only on other dates as authorized by the Fire Chief

Fireworks safety

Fireworks are not toys. Always follow by-law rules when using fireworks:

  • You must be at least 18 years old to buy, store, and use consumer fireworks
  • Choose a wide, clear site away from overhead obstacles (for example, 30 m x 30 m for firing Roman Candles) and ensure spectators stand at the perimeter. Spectators must be at the safe distance specified on the fireworks label.
  • Do not fire in windy conditions when the wind speed is in excess of 20 km/h, as indicated by The Weather Network Niagara Falls
  • Read all instructions on the fireworks. Plan the firing order before you begin.
  • Use a good firing base, such as pails or non-combustible boxes filled with earth or sand
  • If the fireworks have no standing base, bury half their length unless the labelling on the Fireworks directs otherwise. Set them at a 10-degree angle, pointing away from people.
  • Never light fireworks in your hand or hold lighted fireworks in your hand other than a sparkler
  • Light carefully. Always light the fuse at its tip
  • Keep water nearby. Dispose of used fireworks (including debris) in a pail of water.
  • Never try to relight fireworks that did not go off or fix defective fireworks. Wait at least 30 minutes before approaching dud fireworks.
  • Keep fireworks in a cool, dry, ventilated place and in a locked container away from children
