We’re here to help you be a responsible pet owner in Niagara Falls. Learn how to license your dog, follow safety rules, and keep your pet and others safe in our community.

Get a dog licence

You must renew your dog’s licence every year. It’s your job as a pet owner to make sure your dog has a valid licence.

Fees

• Get the current fees on the Schedule of Fees page
• Service dog registration is free. Bring a note from your health practitioner that says a service dog is needed

Where to buy a licence

• Online through the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society’s website
• In person at two locations: City Hall, 4310 Queen Street or MacBain Community Centre, 7150 Montrose Road. Please bring proof if your dog is spayed or neutered.

Pit Bull type dogs

You must purchase licences for pit bull-type dogs directly from the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society.

Keep your dog on a leash

You must walk your dog on a leash unless you’re in an off-leash dog park. If not, you could be fined under the Animal Control By-law.

A leash helps keep your dog safe by:

• Stopping them from getting lost
• Keeping them out of traffic
• Protecting them from wild animals like coyotes
• Preventing them from scaring or hurting people and pets
• Stopping them from eating harmful or dirty things

Pick up after your dog

If you’re walking the dog, it’s your job to clean up its waste. Always carry bags and dispose of waste properly.

Dangerous dogs

If your dog attacks someone or another animal for no reason, it may be called a dangerous dog. Owners must take steps to prevent future problems by:

• Using a muzzle
• Keeping the dog on a strong tether
• Keeping the dog in a pen
• Posting a sign that says “Dangerous Dog”

How to appeal an order to muzzle dogs

If a dog has bitten or attacked a person or another animal, an officer can have the owner comply with muzzle rules. The Dangerous Dog Committee listens to appeals for orders to muzzle dogs and makes final decisions.
