Picture Yourself Here: The Photographic Attraction of Niagara Falls Opens at the Niagara Falls History Museum
NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The Niagara Falls History Museum is presenting Picture Yourself Here: The Photographic Attraction of Niagara Falls, a new exhibition by Montreal-based photographer and researcher Alexandre Campeau-Vallée. The exhibition will be on display in the Ontario Power Generation Gallery from August 9, 2026, to January 10, 2027, with a public launch event on August 8, 2026.
Since the first photograph of Niagara Falls was taken in 1840, photography has played an important role in shaping the Falls' identity. Produced in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair in Urban Landscape, the exhibition brings together photographs created by Campeau-Vallée specifically for the project with artifacts from the Niagara Falls History Museum's collection.
The exhibition explores how photography has influenced both the perception and development of Niagara Falls.
"I consider photography as a form of landscape planning. Niagara Falls — where photography has not only shaped the collective imagination but also literally the development of the site — is an ideal place to reflect on our relationship with the environment. Exploring the museum's rich collection inspired me to create a dialogue between my photographs, created specifically for this exhibition, and artifacts that have helped shape the perception of this iconic landscape."

Campeau-Vallée is a Montreal-based photographer and researcher whose work explores the relationship between photography, landscape, and the environment. A self-taught artist, he holds a master's degree in Environment and Sustainable Development from the Université de Montréal and is currently completing a research-creation PhD in Art History. His work has been exhibited throughout Quebec and Toronto, and he has presented on photography and the environment across Quebec, Europe, and Africa.
