Niagara Falls Fire Department Appoints Ed Melanson as Deputy Fire Chief, Community Risk Reduction

NIAGARA FALLS, ON - The Niagara Falls Fire Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Ed Melanson as Deputy Fire Chief, Community Risk Reduction, effective June 29, 2026.

Melanson brings more than 20 years of fire service experience to the role. Most recently, he served as Director of Fire Services and Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) for the Town of Saugeen Shores, where he led continuous improvement initiatives and enhanced emergency response training for the municipality’s Emergency Control Group

His career began as a volunteer firefighter with the Town of Fort Erie in 2005. He advanced through the ranks to Captain before being appointed Fire Chief of Fort Erie Fire and Emergency Services, a position he held from 2017 to 2022.

Throughout his career, Melanson has demonstrated leadership in emergency response, fire prevention, public education, emergency management, fire investigation, and strategic planning. He has also served on several provincial advisory committees and is a strong advocate for firefighter training, mental wellness, and inclusive service delivery.

“I am extremely pleased to welcome Ed to our team,” said Fire Chief Jo Zambito. “His extensive experience and proven leadership in fire services make him an excellent fit for this role. His background, including his work as a Hazardous Materials Response Technician, will be a valuable asset to our department. I look forward to working with Ed as we continue to advance the Niagara Falls Fire Department.”

As Deputy Fire Chief, Community Risk Reduction, Melanson will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating programs aimed at reducing risks to life, property, and the environment through prevention, public education, and data-driven strategies. He will also assume operational leadership of the department in the Fire Chief's absence, as required.

Melanson is a graduate of the Fire Service Leadership program and holds a Fire Service Administration Certificate from Dalhousie University. He recently completed an Executive Diploma in Municipal Management through the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO).

The City of Niagara Falls welcomes Ed Melanson to the organization and looks forward to the leadership and experience he will bring to the Niagara Falls Fire Department.
