City of Niagara Falls to commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day
NIAGARA FALLS, ON - On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the City of Niagara Falls will hold a flag raising for the "Every Child Matters" flag and then lower it to half-staff to commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.
Members of the media, the public and Indigenous community members are welcome to participate:
- What: National Day for Truth & Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day City of Niagara Falls Flag Raising & Lowering to half-staff
- Where: Rosberg Flag Poles at Niagara Falls City Hall (4310 Queen Street)
- When: Wednesday, September 30, 2026, 10:00 am
- Who: Mayor Jim Diodati, Members of City Council, and the community. Attendants are encouraged to wear their orange shirts.
About National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
The Government of Canada “responded to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s call to action # 80 by creating a day of observation called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which seeks to honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis Survivors, their families, and communities, and to ensure that public commemoration of their history and the legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.”
Canada’s federal government enacted legislation on June 3rd, 2021, that established that each year, on September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation would be observed. National Truth & Reconciliation Day coincides with Orange Shirt Day, a grassroots movement in recognition of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor.
Cultivating Indigenous Culture Through Songs and Stories
Immerse yourself in an all-ages celebration of Indigenous storytelling and joy on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Niagara Falls Exchange (5943 Sylvia Pl).
This free event presented by Patty Krawec (Annishinaabe/Ukranian), collaboration with Cindy Biancaniello (Inuk), Nicole Joy-Fraser (Cree/Metis/East European), and Okie (Choctaw/Irish), will create an Indigenous storytelling experience that combines drumming, joy, and indentity in a collaborative environment that emphasizes shared moments and audience activation.
This event is held in partnership with the Niagara Falls Public Library, the Niagara Falls History Museum, and the Niagara Falls Exchange, and supported by Ontario Culture Days through the Niagara Activation Fund 2026.
