City of Niagara Falls Fire Department Promoting Fireworks Safety for Holiday Weekend

NIAGARA FALLS, ON - As the Victoria Day long weekend approaches, the Niagara Falls Fire Department is reminding all residents and visitors that fireworks are regulated under a municipal by-law and that strict rules are in place to keep the public safe and to prevent nuisances in neighbourhoods.
“Fireworks are often used to celebrate holidays in our community,” stated Fire Chief Jo Zambito. “When used safely and in accordance with the by-law, they can be fun and exciting, but it is important to remember how dangerous fireworks can be when discharged improperly,” added Chief Zambito.
Those wishing to use fireworks this weekend are reminded to follow these rules to prevent any enforcement action from the fire department or Municipal Enforcement Officers.
- Fireworks cannot be discharged over any building, road, vehicles, or hydro lines and cannot cross onto neighbouring properties.
- Keep spectators, especially children, at a safe distance from the fireworks.
- Never discharge fireworks in windy conditions.
- If not the property owner, written permission from the property owner must be obtained prior to discharging fireworks.
- Never discharge fireworks from your hand. Use a sturdy base, such as buckets of sand or dirt.
- Ensure you are familiar with the full requirements of the by-law before discharging.
The fire department would also like to remind the public that fireworks can be discharged on the day before the holiday, the holiday, and the three days following the holiday between 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm.
“If everyone follows the important rules in the by-law, we should all be able to have a safe and enjoyable long weekend,” added Chief Zambito.
