Traffic Signs

Traffic signs play a big role in keeping our roads safe and easy to navigate. They guide drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, helping everyone get where they need to go. Signs use different symbols, colours and shapes for easy identification.

Report a traffic sign issue

Residents can report traffic road sign issues, including damaged or missing signs, to help keep roads safe for everyone.

You can report a sign issue in a few easy ways:

Note: Reports are reviewed by City staff and prioritized based on safety and urgency. If this is an emergency (e.g., a missing or damaged stop sign or other vital safety signage), please call 905-356-1355 immediately.

How we manage traffic signs

The Transportation Services team handles the design, installation, and upkeep of all traffic signs and pavement markings in the city. We carefully choose the right type, size, and placement for every sign to ensure consistency and credibility.

Too few signs can leave drivers unprepared, while too many can lead to people ignoring them. That’s why we follow the strict guidelines set out in the Ontario Traffic Manuals from the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO). These rules ensure that every sign’s size, spacing, and colours meet safety standards.

Signs specific to the City of Niagara Falls

Some signs we use are specific to our city like disabled warning signs and slow down lawn signs.

Disabled warning signs

Disabled Warning Signs are unique to Niagara Falls and were created to address concerns for individuals with physical, developmental, or behavioural challenges. These signs alert drivers to be cautious in residential areas where individuals with disabilities may be present.

Each sign includes the well-known symbol at the top, along with tabs that specify the condition(s) of the individual(s) in the area. For example, the tabs might mention autism or visual and hearing impairments.

Slow down lawn signs

Slow down lawn signs help tackle the issue of speeding on residential streets. They remind drivers to obey speed limits and drive safely in neighborhoods.

The signs feature bold "Slow Down" text in white or yellow against a black background. This color contrast makes them highly visible to passing drivers.

Request a disabled warning or slow down sign

Disabled warning signs: These signs are available at no cost to families or individuals with disabilities, including children and adults with autism or visual and hearing impairments.

Slow down lawn sign: City residents can get one free lawn sign per household. The sign must be placed on private property at least 0.6 meters away from the curb or road edge. It should not block sidewalks, bike paths, or other public spaces.
