Speed Limits
In Niagara Falls, the maximum speed limit is 50 km/h, unless signs show otherwise. You’ll see signs at major city entry points reminding drivers of this law.
Obey speed limits
The Highway Traffic Act stipulates that all roads within a city are 50 kilometres per hour unless signed otherwise. This includes all roadways within the city limits, regardless of whether the road is in an urban or rural area.
- Remember, when you are driving on any street in Niagara Falls and do not see any speed limit signs, the speed limit on that street is 50 km/h
- Always follow the maximum speed limit posted on road signs, but adjust your speed to ensure you can stop safely
- Drive slower than the speed limit in bad weather, heavy traffic, or construction zones.
- Lower speed limits in school zones and construction areas help protect children and workers near the road
Automated speed enforcement cameras
In November 2025, the Province of Ontario proclaimed Bill 56, Building a More Competitive Economy Act, 2025 which repeals the authority for municipalities to operate automated speed enforcement cameras within Ontario.

Neighbourhood traffic management
Safe and pleasant streets make our neighbourhoods better places to live. When traffic is well-managed, it improves life for everyone, whether you’re walking, cycling, or driving. Many residents are concerned about speeding, traffic volumes, and pedestrian safety. The City of Niagara Falls has introduced neighbourhood traffic management programs to address these concerns.
Traffic calming measures
Traffic calming measures help reduce traffic and improve safety on residential streets by changing driver behaviour. These solutions often involve physical changes to the road, such as speed humps or traffic circles, to slow vehicles and discourage non-local traffic from cutting through neighbourhoods. While speed humps are highly effective, all-way stop signs alone generally don’t work for controlling speed.
When are speed control devices considered?
To consider installing speed control devices on a street:
- At least 51% of residents on the street must support the idea
- A speeding problem must be confirmed through studies
A speeding problem is identified when:
- The operating speed is 10 km/h or more above the speed limit (e.g., 61 km/h in a 50 km/h zone) on a residential street
- The operating speed is between 1 km/h and 10 km/h over the speed limit (e.g., 53 km/h in a 50 km/h zone) on a residential street with a school, park, retirement home, or other pedestrian generator nearby
How to request speed control on your street
If you think your street could benefit from speed control measures, contact the City's Transportation Services Department. Once we receive your request, we’ll conduct technical studies to check for speeding issues. If a problem is found, we’ll send a questionnaire to property owners on the street to gather opinions on adding speed control devices.
Visit our Traffic Surveys and Reviews page to view the open studies.
